Warwickshire Guild
Prior to the formation of the guild the area was described as 'the only county in England not covered by a county Guild or Society.' Although the Diocese of Coventry was founded in 1918, the Guild title was not changed until 1946, when it became the Coventry Diocesan Guild. [Research by John Harrison.]
Guild became the Coventry Diocesan Guild in 1946 following the founding of the Diocese for Coventry in 1918. See Coventry Diocesan Guild page for details of membership certificate for the Warwickshire Guild. Coventry Diocesan Guild
Previously known as the Warwickshire Guild of Change Ringers, the name changed in 1946 [Research by John Harrison.]
The inaugural meeting of the Warwickshire Guild of Church Bell Ringers took place on 23rd November 1907. Despite the Coventry Diocese being formed in 1918, it was not until 1928 that a member, Mr Sykes, suggested a change of name to the Coventry Diocesan Guild. The following years saw this proposal resurrected but nothing further came of it. It was not until 1946 that the revised name was finally adopted. Further information can be found in the publication Coventry Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers: A Centenary History 1907 to 2007 by Christopher Mew (2007).
