Ancient Society of College Youths

This society is centred on London, but members can live anywhere. [Research by John Harrison.]

The Society is said to have been founded on 5th November 1637 with Lord William Brereton as its first Master, although it is possible that is was in existence before this date. The earliest change ringing recorded by the Society was circ. 1642 when it managed 'a plain six score on five bells'. Robert Roan who was Master in 1652 is said to have invented Grandsire Doubles and Plain Bob Minor. Election is for life after being voted a member and paying an entrance fee. [Research and observations associated with the Council Library Certificates Collection by Chris Ridley.]
