Australia and New Zealand Association

Formerly the New South Wales Association of Change Ringers, first started in 1895, again in 1930 and was finally brought into being in 1946 as the Australian and New Zealand Association. [Research by John Harrison.]

On 21st December 1895 A B Joyner, Honorary Secretary of St Mark's Society, Darling Point, wrote a letter to the Bell News and Ringers' Record mentioning in passing that an Association of ringers had been established. Unfortunately there are no further records of this group, but a New South Wales Association was formed around 1930 but was concerned with organising social activities only and does not appear to have lasted long. It was re-established and held an inaugural day on 14th January 1946. On 31st May 1961 it was agreed to change the title to the Australian and New Zealand Association of Bellringers. The first meeting of the new society was held on 2nd June 1962 in the parish hall of All Saints, North Parramatta. Further information can be found in the publication We Sing in a Strange Land by Elizabeth Bleby (1989).
