Winchester Diocesan Guild

This Guild was founded by Rev. Arthur du Boulay Hill and Canon F. T. Madge. At that time the Diocese of Winchester was very large. In 1924 it was divided into three dioceses: Winchester, Portsmouth and Guildford. The ringers decided that ringers in the Dioceses of Portsmouth and Winchester should form the Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Guild and those in Guildford would form a separate Guildford Diocesan Guild. Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Guild

Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers [Research by John Harrison.]

The original Winchester Diocesan Guild was founded on 26th June 1879 at a meeting held in Basingstoke. It was the result of the efforts of two individuals, Revd A du Boulay Hill the Revd Canon F T Madge. The new Guild's area was extensive, for the then Diocese of Winchester stretched from parts of the present Greater London in the east to Bournemouth in the west, and included most of Surrey, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. The decision to divide the Diocese in 1924 to create new diocese for Guildford and Portsmouth led to the setting up of the current Guild, with the Guildford Diocesan Guild being established as a separate entity on 1st May 1927. For further background see the Ringing World (22nd June 1979, pages 509 to 518). [Research and observations associated with the Council Library Certificates Collection by Chris Ridley.]
